I use the compression release religiously for the same reason; to develop oil pressure before detonation. I only wish my TS354C had one.

I didn't realize it doesn't have one. I'm presuming it hard to start. Does it have glow plugs? Why do you suppose it didn't come with one?

A couple of other guys claim to have compression release on theirs. I'm not disputing what I can't see - but there's zero clearance on mine, between the back of the valve cover and the front of the fuel tank. Perhaps I got one with a larger tank than they did, who knows....
And yes, it's got glow plugs. Without them, it would not likely have started at all when I first got it. But the addition of two new relays and some heavier gauge wire works has made hard starting a non-issue. I use one for the starter motor, the other for the glow plugs, and wired it so the glow plugs still get juice while the starter is cranking. I also added a charging wire between the alternator and the battery. Huge difference

That sounds like a huge improvement. Does that starter wiring heating the glow plugs while cranking still allow you to heat the glow plugs prior ...separate to cranking? Or does it all occur at once? Rob-

I have an extra wire connecting the two relays. When the keyswitch is in HEAT, only the glow plug relay is energized. When the keyswitch is in START, the starter relay is energized. The one and only job of the extra wire is to carry 12v to the glow plug relay whenever the starter relay is energized. When I return the keyswitch to RUN, both relays release.

Welcome to the board, Chief!
Good tips and mods. How many hours on that 454 now? Didn't you win that JMparts raffle for a super starter for the TS354?
Rob - Thanks for this post - I'm at 160 hrs and due for this service.

Thanks Brad. Not really sure without going out to the shed, but I'm gonna speculate something over 400 hours between the two tractors. And yes, my name was picked outa the hat by DelJen for that promotional starter.

edit: Checked this morning; ~250 on the KM454, nearly 200 on the TS354C

I am new to the picture posting thing so I may need a tutorial from WC Rob. i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii163/zogman_bucket/Picture006Small.jpg

I responded to your email before checking this thread. My valve cover extends rearward to where it's almost flush with the black frame that holds the hood latch. And my fuel tank extends forward to about where your decompression lever is. Matter of fact - when I adjusted the valves - I can't honestly say I even saw a decompression rod on the valve train. I know for sure there's no lever on the valve cover.
It's my impression that all TS354Cs are Y485s with shuttle shift, right?
Oh, and remind me again please, why you disconnected the cable. I forgot

Ok, that could explain it. We'd have to compare tractors side by side, but I could see where a different size mid-connect box could make a difference in the gap between the fuel tank and the valve cover.
All I know is that mine has no cylinder decompression capability, and I wish it did. I've already solved the hard-starting issue, but I'd still use it to get oil pressure before cold starts.

Ok, that could explain it. We'd have to compare tractors side by side, I'll try to get you some pics of whatever you would like to see after I get off this 12 hr work schedule. Right now it's dark when I leave and dark when I get home.

[ Right now it's dark when I leave and dark when I get home. Been there, done that. When I lived in the far northeast of Scotland, late December sunrise was about 1100 - sunset came shortly thereafter, around 1430. It never really got light - I'd call it dim at best. But six months later, you have to sleep with sunglasses on //greg//
