In previous threads, there was some discussion about the 4wd lever popping out of 4wd on our tractors. I've read that this is a fairly common problem. LOL ... A lot of guys just use a bungee cord to hold the lever...
I thought it would be useful information on this board.
When I first got my Kama 554, the 4wd lever kept popping out back and going into 2wd.
I was told there was a spring loaded plunger and detent that should be adjusted to hold the lever in the desired position.
However, the tractor was brand new and I didn't know didly squat about it at that time. I was afraid to open it up and screw something up I didn't know about.
On the other hand, I knew I could make something to keep the lever where I wanted ... I knew this was a sure fire way to do it.
So I made this bracket. It has a sliding knob that pushes against the 4wd lever and holds in either 2wd or 4wd. Just loosen the knob and slide the lever to it's desired location, tighten the knob and that's the end of that.
It was a scrap piece of billet 6061-T6 I had lying around the shop. I milled it up on the Bridgeport at home. I spaced the bolts to be the same distance apart as the one in the cover plate for the shifter lever and then replaced two of the 4 bolts with longer ones.
A picture of the bracket and sliding knob.
This side shows the piece that holds the lever in the desired position.
Now it doesn't matter if there's a spring loaded plunger or not. However, my solution doesn't correct the spring plunger problem. Although mine is more positive without a doubt, you lose the convenience of moving the lever from 2wd to 4wd without first having to unlock the screw. Not a big deal for me, but there is a correct solution.
After reading my thread, Brad did the adjustment on his Kama 554 the correct way. He posted several photos of the procedure along with excellent documentation. I'm hoping he reads this thread and re-posts his comments and photos. It would be of great value to others who have a similar problem.
