After re-torquing the head bolts and setting the valve clearance. I changed the Oil and Filter. After pulling the oil drain plug I thought this would be a good time to modify it to be a magnetic drain plug. I live 2 hours round trip from town - So I have learned to do more for myself with less. I have heard that the magnetic drain plugs are available from many auto parts stores in metric sizes. Next time I drain the Hydraulics, Transmission, Rear-end, Front-end etc. I will install / modify all the plugs to be magnetic. I found a small rectangle magnet, drilled a hole in the OEM drain plug, then pressed in the magnet: Larry

This is a follow 50 hour followup: First oil change after installing the magnetic drain plug. Below is a pic I took of the metal shavings the magnet captured: I was able to wipe them off easily with a rag then re-install the drain plug: I am hoping the shavings will become fewer and fewer as time goes by. In 50-100 hours we shall see if there are less metal shavings attached to the magnet. Stay tuned...... Larry

That is a really good mod Larry. I have yet to do that to my Kama. I've noticed quite a bit of metal shavings in both the motor oil and hydraulic system. Not a good sign but I see yours has the same problem. If we can keep them from going around a again, it should help slow down overall wear. Rob-

It will be interesting to see what's stuck to the magnet next oil change. My hope is it's much less. Fortunately there were no big chunks stuck. What was on there were very fine particles so I guess that's a good thing?

LARRY, A truly great mod we should all copy. Where did you get the magnet? Is it a press fit only or did you glue it also? Thanks for sharing. KIDD

KIDD,
The magnet is press fit. Had I known the thread size I probably would have just bought one at auto zone or pep boys instead of making one.

Here is a quick update on the magnetic oil drain plug: On 4/5/2008 (last Saturday) I hit the 300 hour mark, so it was time to changed the oil. Last oil change I was careful to fill it exactly to the high mark on the dip stick, as you can see the oil level is still very close to that mark, very impressive for 100 hours. These TY395 engines are pretty amazing. Larry

As predicted, the metal shavings were much reduced from the initial oil change and installing the magnetic drain plug. My hope is next time the shavings will be even less. Eventually to the point of virtually none. It took exactly 8 quarts to top it off and to fill the filter. A NAPA Gold 1515 oil filter fits nicely on the TY395 engine. Larry
