Dwayne,
Sorry to see those gears messed up like that. At least everything else looks OK. Is it possible to replace just the broken ring and pinion to save? or is there just too much to take apart. Looks like it might be quite a job to get those gears out. Discovering the root cause may be helpful, is there a way to see if there are any foreign objects somewhere in there. I don't want to see any more broken gears on any more tractors. I hope you get er fixed up real soon.

Is it possible to replace just the broken ring and pinion to save? Thanks, Larry. The gears would be real easy to replace if there were any in the United States, lol. I was lucky in that Chip has the entire hog head(some people call em a pumpkin head) The root cause was the operator, compounded by the Chinese setting these things up with a lot of slop. I've thought about re-shimming the replacement more like a car rear end, then I thought to myself that might not be smart either. the gears having some play might have saved the transfer case or the transmission.

I think I would follow Rob's suggestion of increasing the depth and contact area. As long as they don't bind, the transmission and transfer case would be fine.
If the teeth are too soft on the gears and deflect, they would tighten up the clearances until they bound...not good...but I think they are fairly hard gears.
OAN, I would take your damaged ones and see if you can get or have someone make american replacements. I know there are places that make custom gear sets so you might get a stronger set.
The clearance thing makes me think you should pop your drives open and check those clearances too JIC. Perhaps the whole front end was set up loose.

Got the replacement hog head from Chip Today. Fast service for sure.
This one doesn't have near as much slop as the other one. It should be good the way it is.
Hopefully I will get my tractor back in service this weekend. I need to do some brush hogging.

Well, my tractor is back in operation. I hate to tell this on myself but, I guess I will. I put the dang thing in upside down the 1st time. When i put it in 4WD the front tires were trying to spin backwards as the rear went forward. It never even dawned on me that thing would even go in backwards. When we slapped it up there and the bolt holes lined up we thought it was correct.
A lot of cussing and another 2 hours later it was fixed.

Oh man, that is funny, but not really. hahaha Good thing you couldn't drive anywhere like ... I know I would've for sure. I can see me doing the "crabwalk" for about a mile before figuring it out. I hate that when they don't put an offset bolt or dowel hole to keep the line up correct. It's so easy to do. Rob-

Rob- Maybe if anyone else ever has to do this they will read this and put a mark on it before they take it out. Since I had to pull my axles twice I took a good look at the gears you had trouble with. Mine weren't meshed deep enough and were showing some obvious signs of wear. I re-installed the front drives with fewer shims. Guess I'll see how it holds up over time. Mine were sure to fail if left the way it was. At least my front end sounds normal again.

That's all good news Dwayne. Now you can get to work. Really glad everything turned out fine and that you adjusted the front drives too.
