Well unless they are sure no one is around, I think they will get an education pretty quick. Most places that have tractors, have guns, and a person with a will to use them to protect their home, family, and perhaps their livleyhood...

One thing about dead thieves, they don't commit any more crimes, and ones with an ass full of rock salt might think twice about it.

Rock salt is a waste of good powder. Better they die of lead poisoning than salt poisoning.
