I noticed a lot of freeplay in the radial position of my steering wheel so I pulled it off to see what was up. The top of the shaft went through a rubber bushing that looked pretty worn in the middle. I found a steel bushing that had the right ID and the 1.5" OD was just enough to allow me to turn it to form a shoulder. I took pics of some of the dimensions. The focus is wrong but you can just see the bushing at the top of the tube under the steering wheel. I greased it up good when I assembled it. Added a phenolic suicide knob from TSC to finish it off. So far it's been working fine since my fix. No new vibrations going from rubber to steel. Brad

Brad, interesting improvement you made there. I didn't know you had a lathe. I just went out to check mine it seems tight ... not worn like yours. (made the long 300' walk each way, next time I'll take the ATV ;D) If I understand your mod correctly, the 1-½" OD goes inside the steering wheel itself, right? I don't get how that ID would be so worn out then. It should turn as an assembly along with the steering wheel and steering shaft IMO. LOL ... Unless it was in there just to take up space. You never know with these machines and assemblers. I have very little play there, so I won't need to make that change yet. Oh, where is all the stress going to now, and are you worried now that it's steel it won't wear out the next weakest, more expensive to repair link in the system?? I didn't thinks so ... Ha, I just had to get that in there. ;D Thanks for sharing your mod. Hey, one of the few things that wore out on your 554 before mine did. Rob-

You must be looking for trouble on your Kama, I would have never noticed something like that. Nice mod Brad - What ? no grease nipple? I like the politically correct suicide knob. Hows the backhoe sub-frame and hydraulic outriggers coming along - or did you forget where you posted that thread?

I didn't mean to make you walk! If you look at the first picture you can see the original rubber bushing. It sits in the top of the steering column tube and keeps the shaft centered. All that clearance around the original bushing allowed the shaft to wobble. The steering wheel mounts on the shaft spline and doesn't actually touch anything but the shaft. Don't quote me out of context but the rubber wore out because I didn't lube the shaft. So Larry, yeah, a grease zerk would have been a nice touch but I just kept it simple and greased the heck out of it when I assembled it. Hopefully the wheel will squeak when it needs more and maybe I will add the nipple then. For whatever reason my summer has flown by and I am just now getting back to my projects. Diane still seems to have her own list of projects in which I am the prime contractor. I did also manage to squeeze in a MIG cart this past week so my big bottle of CO2 is no longer tied to the work bench. OSHA yellow (It was free!) If you squint you can see the lathe. Thanks guys, Brad

Ah, I squinted like all get out and could see the tailstock but not the headstock of your lathe. You have a pretty cool little shop there Brad. I really that welding cart you made ... super deluxe! I want to do the same for my stick welders since they are hard to move around on those little wheels ... they are like penguins to move around. But my MillerTIG welder has a really nice set up like your cart. It's got room for 2 Argon bottles. That is a full sized Argon cylinder on it to give you an idea of size. Also a photo of my Accraturn lathe.
