Larry,
I got the T-stat package today, thank you very much for the pressure gauge and rubber spacers. I will try to install 2 weekends from now. I will let you know how it goes.

Kevin,
Glad to here everything made it to you in one piece. I look forward to you documenting the outcome of your t-stat mod and upgrade kit. Two weekends from now? I can hardly stand the wait. Are you going to flush the cooling system while your at it?

Larry,
Actually I just flushed the system last weekend but I guess an extra flush will not hurt! Yeah, it will have to be at least two weekends from now before I get a chance to install it. Would'nt you I'm back in school again! I must be the Armys most edumacated soldier!! Anyways, I will try to get home every other weekend.
Have a good one, Kevin

What a great thread! I was just telling Rob I got a new temperature sender. Well I put it in and thought it had to be the wrong one or not working. The gauge read almost 40c what a disappointment I put the sender in hot coffee and got a multi meter reading so I knew it was working. [no I didn't drink the coffee] It was by a lucky stumble I found this thread. Thanks Larry. Richard

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the acknowledgment. Is the T-Stat in your Foton of similar design as the one in my 354 Jinma? I would be interested in seeing some pics of your tractor and the T-stat / housing. Maybe this mod will work for you? I dunno.
This mod is the cats meow for the TY395 Engine, I forget how many T-stat mod kits I have made and sent to members of this and other forums. The low operating temp on the TY395 engine was a mystery for years. Until one day looking at it I had an Epiphany <- Thats a big word for me HaHaHa. Let me know if this is something that may be beneficial to you.

Greetings Larry, The Foton has a Y385T engine. It has all the earmarks of the same ailment. When I open it up I will take some pictures. I'll have to do that photo bucket thing before I can post them. I've to replace hoses to polish off the last problem I have been working on. I think this is very likely the answer. I imagine owners of tractors with the 385 engine have the same compaint. I'll put this sensor back in, I was going to call to see if there was another sensor to choose from. Thanks again. Richard

Richard, If Larry's mod will work for your engine, it's a great and simple mod. He sent one down to me here in Chile (amongst other things) and the indicated temperature went strait from 40c to 80c . The engine runs smoother and more economical and a further plus for me is knowing that at 80c the engine is taking much less wear than before. Hope it's compatible !

Greetings Dick, That sounds good, I'll get to that after a coulple other fixes. How far are you from Portillo the ski resort? We have friends who instruct there on the off season in this hemisphere. Richard

Hi Paul, Sorry for the late reply, been at the farm and out of contact. We are about 40 miles south of Portillo in Santiago and about 20 North East of it at the new place. As it happens one of my pals (Gregg) has been a ski instructor here for many years, He's from California originally but like so many of us fell for the beauty of the Latinas and the country and , as he says, the best surf (where he lives on the coast) anywhere, and few people who know !! He stays here in the Summer months (now) and just plays in the sea. Good or what? Dick

Hi Larry, Re: I just opened it up the T-STAT is different in my 254, its the flat type. The by pass is lower and uses this type. The STAT is a 72c but the gauge does not read that high. There was a ring of rubber on the bottom that came off with the STAT. Maybe enough water moves past the STAT because the rubber has degraded. The reading is not up to 80c with paper in front of the radiator. Richard

I'm not able to post pictures. I have a pictures on photobuck but haven't found out how to post yet. I don't have the thickness of gasket paper I need to put this back together. It had a fairly thick gasket, without the rubber trim gasket intact the stand off between the STAT seat and the square housing may have enough room for water to bypass.

Hi Richard, Sounds like you are getting a handle on your 254 low operating temp. Have you measured the actual temp with a non contact IR gun? or perhaps some other means like an external thermometer so as to get a feel for the real temp vs the dash gauge temp? Here is a link detailing how to post pictures: chinesetractor.proboards66.com/index.cgi?board=info&action=display&thread=241Larry

Greetings Larry. No! No I didn't use any external testings. I used the Super Human finger in the water and the touch the block and hummm..method. I cleaned, painted, and installed took some photos, can't show them here yet. I pluged the block heater in and came up to have a brandy and a cup a.

I noticed there is what looks like an adjustable valve on the bypass. maybe a little less bypass? I made a manila gasket, doesn't look like anything can get by the STAT.
