Hi Every one. I am new to the side so bear with me. Last week I put money down on a 5 year old damaged FT 404. ( The guy had it parked outside & a storm brought 2 trees down on it. ) Any how my retired friend, mechanic, told me it is very fixable. Its 160 mile away so I need to get some stuff together to tie it down for transporting. Any help?? I was thinking of some chains, binders & maybe some nylon slings. What do I need to buy?? Wish I would have taken pictures when I went to look at it. I hear there are some holes in the front that may work but it is 160 miles away. Thanks for any help. Roy

Welcome Roy and congratulations on your impending tractor project ownership! I like chains much better than nylon slings for vehicle transport. Minimum 2 chains and one load binder. Chain one end down, roll the tractor to snug the chain up, then secure the other end with the second chain and tighten with the load binder. The ratchet binders are easiest to use. Make sure the tractor tires are at full pressure. The referenced holes on the front may be the weight attachment points. One of the Foton owners or dealers can probably give you the thread size. If the weights or weight brackets are there they might provide an easy place to attach the chains. In the back you should have the drawbar (belly bar) hitch available. www.farmprotractors.com/images/Foton40_4.jpgDoes it have a loader? If so what model? What are you hauling it on? What is the extent of the damage? (To the tractor ) Take lots of pictures and post them here. We love tractor projects!

Hi Roy, I like chains and binders too. I tie down to my trailer 4 places. My personal opinion is not to use nylon straps, although many guys do. Probably my own mistake, but I had one tear because I put it over a corner that was sharper than I thought. So now I only use chains. I tied the rear end to each side going back a little and the front end to each side going forward a little. The tractor was like it was being "pulled apart" in 4 opposite directions. Good luck! Rob-

I have no loader yet, I will be keep my eyes open for a deal on one in the future, $$$$$ are going to be running low pretty soon. Car hauler, I can borrow to get it home. I have four pictures of the damage but will have to figure out how to post them. My brother has chains so all I have to buy for the moment is binders, will get them in the next day or so. I am new to the tractor stuff so at 61 I am back in school, this should be fun. Thanks for the input (I'll work on the pictures)

Roy, First welcome to the world of tractors and the forum. When transporting a tractor, I always put a chain on each rear axle going to a rear tie down on the trailer and one on each side of the front axle going to a tie down on the front of the trailer. Air up the tires if they are low and make sure the binders are tight. I've hauled tractors from South Carolina to Oklahoma on a flat bed a few times with no problems. So I guess I'm doing something right. Check your chains often if your going far. Also I use straps too, but their commercial 3 inch certified straps. PJ

Got out today & bought 4 new binders for 3/8" chain, I have many nylon ratchet type tie downs so I should be OK. Wish the weather would break, would like clear roads for this. Keep warm every body & Happy New Year. 2010

Well I hope your all staying warm. A friend went with me to get the tractor & attachments today. Took all day to get it loaded on a car career & chained down & back home. All went well chains stayed tight, checked it twice. Thanks for the input.

Ray I will do that if some one on this site can explain how it is done. Got water in the rear end & froze, heated with a torpedo heater to get it to move, removed plug from the bottom & got about 1 quart of water & oil so far. I put heat tape on the bottom to try & get all the ice to melt & drain, drained the box where the 4 wheel drive locks & got 3 quarts of mixed water & oil so far. The engine will not crank over, with a broken exhaust manifold I am guessing that condensate rusted the cylinder walls, the previous owner let it set outside all summer uncovered. Removed injectors & put SEAFOAM in all cylinders. Removed one rear fender, radiator, batteries, hood. At this point: drained engine oil-looked ok, I can smell the seafoam in the oil so it is draining thru. Found something new called EVAPO-RUST. Bought 2 quarts & put in on top of the seafoam. Will try a prybar sometime today to see if it will budge. Bottom line, there is more wrong with this machine that I imagined but plan on working with it till the cost is more that I am willing to pay.

Sounds like a real big project...Good Luck....Here are the instructions for posting pictures. When posting pictures use the THUMBNAIL method - Your pictures MUST be Thumbnails (small little pictures that you click on to make it bigger) Here's how - Open a Photobucket dot com account - A free one. Or for 25 bucks a year you get video and a whole bunch of storage space. First - go to photobucket.com/ you must register, upload your photos, once you get to that point read the below detailed info on how to get the photos in your post as a click-able thumbnail. Basically They (Photobucket) have an HTML code generator to post pictures for message boards. It's real easy, just copy & paste. Once you get the hang of it - it's not magic or rocket science. It took me some time but I taught myself how to do it. After the pictures are uploaded (and you are logged into photo bucket) click on the little box under the picture to "select" it, then push the "Generate HTML and Image code" button located in the lower right of the photobucket web page) - when the page refreshes, click in the area with the text in the box "IMG click-able thumbnails for message boards - recommended" the code will automatically be copied to your clipboard, then go back to your forum post and right mouse Click in the text box, then paste it into the text of your post - and it will work.

I thought the hour meter showed 105 hours but after getting out & cleaning it I could see it has 195 hours, I would think that would be almost broke in. I am a city guy forced into retirement because of back surgery, bought 54 acres in Kentucky in June, hence the need for a tractor. Thanks again Ray Have not figured out the Avitar yet.

Thank you the great photos...This looks like you will have to replace lots of tin...I think tin and fibreglass is quite reasonable price??? Strip of the BAD parts and get it running, then look for tin.
Good Luck RayH
