k... here's the scoop... Turns out ... I probably tore it down for nothing. ..well, almost nothing.. I did end up replacing a couple rod bearings just because.. well.. I was there.. ..but realistically, could have put everything back without changing anything. Anyway, ended up being an injector causing my misfire *AND* the smoke from the adjacent cylinders. Even witnessed this after replacing the injector. ..didn't bleed it's line so it ran on 1, 3, & 4 'til the air came out. When #2 started coming to life, I noticed when it fired, no smoke from 1 & 3. When #2 misfired, smoke from 1 & 3. In the end, Chip (with the patience of Job) got me everything I required. I only wish I would have thought of the injector much earlier than 10 minutes before I talked to him last. (like prior to tearing it apart/down).

Thanks for the update on that ! I really hate all the cliffhanger endings on threads on these forums. I appreciate you sharing that knowledge with us - hopefully I can benefit from it someday. I have an unfortunate tendency to seek the most complex solution rather than the simplest if I don't watch myself pretty closely.

I have an unfortunate tendency to seek the most complex solution rather than the simplest if I don't watch myself pretty closely. me too... and that's exactly what I ended up with this time. ..of course, every step deeper started with the phrase, "well.. it's only a couple hours more work to <fill in the blank>."

Yeah, the road to hell is paved with the sweat, blood and ears of guys who have uttered that phrase. ;D

Glad to hear your engine didn't wear out already. I've had my share od troubleshooting woes. Last weekend I fooled around with a weedeater engine all day, then just bought a whole new machine.
