Both of the cast iron 'hubs' that the brake pedals attach to have what appear to be fill and drain holes on the top and bottom, just outboard of where they bolt to the transmission. I pulled the bottom bolt on both sides and they were bone dry. Should there be some kind of fluid in these brakes? I'm assuming they're isolated from the gear lube via a seal or something?
Thanks again for all your knowledge!

I pulled the bottom bolt on both sides and they were bone dry. Yes, they should be dry.... no oil or water. There is a seal that keep the diff oil out of the brakes. Ronald Ranch Hand Supply

I think the holes are there to make sure that they stay dry:)

As Ronald and Ron have indicated, yes they are dry disk brakes.
The lower drain plug is removed periodically to check and make sure they are bone dry. I would suggest on an annual basis that the top and bottom plugs be removed, then blast out the break dust with a high pressure air hose with rubber nozzle sealed against the top hole, blasting the dust out the bottom hole.

And hold your breath while blasting out the old brake dust- No telling what their using for brake material! (remember the mouthwash?) May be the good stuff they can't use in the states anymore. -Ed

Amen to that Ed, I`d bet the farm that they use asbestos in their brakes and clutch discs. That stuff which had it`s own pavilion at the 1939 Worlds Fair touting it as the magic mineral, should be avoided at every opportunity. Your body can`t get rid of it, and thousands of particles of asbestos can fit on the head of a pin. What ever you take in will always be there as a foreign body and an irritant to the lung linings. My job made us all get certified to handle asbestos, then in the future when we get sick they can claim we were negligent in how we handled it. It`s something the Law Dept. cooked up to counter future law suits to be brought by the future widows. I had quite a few coworkers succumb to cancers from exposure to asbestos and PCB laden transformer oil. Like the old saying," you are what you eat", and breath and touch.
