I was lubing my new 284, got to the zerk fitting at the back of the rear axle, and started pumping away. Now, most of the joints were either bone dry or full of salthingyer, so I'd been pumping in some serious amounts of fluid all over the tractor, but all of a sudden it dawned on me that I'd probably pumped 50 times at this rear axle zerk and hadn't felt any resistance nor seen any grease come out.
So, question is, is it possible to 'fill' these rear zerks, or did I just need a few squirts and otherwise I've pumped a bunch of grease into my rear diff? Does this indicate a problem?

There's been some discussion about that but I can't remember who wrote on it. It might have been Parry or Paul? I think there is supposed to be an oil seal or something there and if you add too much grease it blows it out....can't quite remember though. I know for sure on the front drives those grease fittings in the hub are redundant. It appears gear oil gets in there to lube. Rob-

I had the same question on my 284. Discussions on another Board led us to the conclusion that: 1. There are 4 grease fittings that feed bearings in enclosed spaces where there is not a way to tell if they are adequately lubed. 2. There are the 2 on the rear axles also the front and rear supports for the front axle. 3. Rather than take the chance on overfilling and blowing a seal, put a couple of shots of grease in these 4 fittings every 50 hours or so. RonJ

ok, excelent. Is there a way to tell if I've already damaged the seal? Will gear lube start leaking out the axle in question?
