Last night I was hauling wood to the cellar with my IHT 284 after dark using the head lights. I could smell burning plastic so I checked under the hood and wires to the lights and found nothing wrong. After about an hour the lights died and all the guages went dead . I did not shut the engine off but, I checked the fuse block and found that an original fuse had failed only after melting the block housing and burning off a wire. I used the tractor to finish up the wood and made sure I disconnected the battery before I went in for the night after parking where I keep the tractor. I suspected I would not be able to restart if I shut down before I finished and I was correct in that assumption. Today I called Affordable and ordered a new fuse block and some additional parts I needed. The cost is reasonable but, be sure I will replace all the chinese fuses in the new block to prevent a future melt down. Elton

That sucks Elton, sorry to hear your tractor is out of service. Did you figure out what shorted out originally to cause the meltdown. The chinese wiring harness is a joke and the switches and lights are just crap, at least they are on my 03 Jinma 284. I don`t know if it`s gotten any better of late, but mine looks like a high school science project.

If you NEED to run it it's pretty easy to jumper the starter but you need to be double careful to have more than one shifter in neutral and still stand clear. On the other hand I'm sure you will get the parts soon and have it together better than new.
Good luck!

Bummer about the Chernobyl Meltdown - Check this out - www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/09/auto_fuses.htmlHarbor Freight's Chinese made fuse assortment kit was recalled last august. I would imagine many of these fuses made it into the US market many years ago as well as world wide into many vehicles. Maybe run 12 ga wire from the headlights to the switch and then to the fuse block, also increase the wire size (10 ga) feeding the new fuse block. With larger gage wire, it's sure to carry enough load so that when the current capacity of the fuse is exceeded it will blow the fuse instead of melting wires. Larry

Elton, sorry to hear about your fuse problem. You're luck that's all that melted. After reading that link Larry posted it scares me because I have those fuses in Loretta's new Jinma now. We've been lucky that the fuses in her fuse block have blown so far with no other problems, other than that 14 ga wire burning up which goes to the clutch safety switch. We were lucky it was only that one wire and that we saw it happen. Instead of ordering another Chinese replacement, why don't you get an American automotive style and fit it to your tractor. That's what Larry did to my Kama 554 a couple years ago. Rob-

Thanks all for your input. My replacement block arrived yesterday and is installed. I replaced the fuses from a supply I had from a few years ago. These it turns out also are made in China. The fuse wire does look smaller than the fuses in the block. I will have to see if I can get a selection made in the US. I have also diconnected the two head lamps on the outside of the head lamp array to see if this will help the circuit. I think the wire harness was originally for only two headlamps. I am pleased that Affordable was so prompt in getting me my parts and now I can tractor anytime after the mud dries up. Snow cover is in full melt and by May I might be able to move again. Elton
