Have you got a mower and rake? Sure do, got an old IH 7 foot sickle bar and a JD pull behind rake. I've been working on buying some of this old stuff for a couple yrs now. I hope to sell enough hay this yr to pay for the equipment. I had to completely rebuild the blade on the mower and replace a lot of the guards but, surprisingly enough tractor supply carries the parts. I hope the baler works. The man said it did but it's hard to try one out this time of yr. Besides that it needs oiling and greasing before it's run. I also got a hay conditioner in the deal for free. I'll post some pics of all this stuff running this summer.

Nice find Dwayne how many acres you going to plant? What's the going rate for a bale of hay in your area?
Horse-quality alfalfa hay: Price/ton Colorado $200-220 Idaho 120-160 Kansas (southwestern) 150-200 Kansas (northeastern) 125-165 Montana 120-130 Nebraska (western) 150 New Mexico 190-200 Oregon 135-165 Utah 100-140 Washington (Columbia Basin) 145-170

Nice find Dwayne how many acres you going to plant? What's the going rate for a bale of hay in your area? I'm just baling grass hay for now. It's a pasture mix with fescue, orchard grass, a little alfalfa and clover. This grass hay has been selling for about $5/ bale. I've got about 15 acres I could put in alfalfa. who knows maybe later. for now the hobby horse people are glad to pay $5 for pasture mix. The drought was so severe last year that even if we have a good year this year the supply is still going to be low.

Dwayne, I've got about maybe 4 to 5 acres where I could reasonably grow and harvest some alfalfa hay. Would it be worth it for me to try to find something like that? I plan on getting a few animals once I move up permanently. How many bales do you normally get per acre? Rob-

Would it be worth it for me to try to find something like that? How many bales do you normally get per acre? Rob- Depends on what kind of animals you want. Horses or cattle will eat pasture mix just fine but, horses need more protein because of their stomachs. Grains along with grass hay will serve them fine. People with high dollar horses like alfalfa because it's the cheapest source for high protein. production can vary a lot depending on weather 50 to 100 bales/acre/cutting. Hay making equipment is expensive unless you go used and that has it's own problems. Unless you have a lot of animals it's easier and cheaper to plant them some pasture and feed them purchased hay and grain when pasture is not growing. I bought my used equipment mainly to avoid just throwing away the farms hay production. People need it and, I can make a little extra cash after I pay off the equipment.
