After receiving my tractor I removed the infamous hydraulic suction strainer to take a look at it. It was covered in metal shavings. I removed the strainer and end retainers to flush it out. I then noticed that whatever they use to "Glue" the ends with was dissolving in a bad way. That's when I decided this thing has got to go and now. I fashioned my own suction strainer with one from northern tool. CLICK HEREWhatever they use to “Glue” the strainer together with does not resist hydraulic fluid – you can see below how bad this is and that it can contaminate valves, pumps, cylinders etc. Larry

Good post Larry, I added a spin on suction strainer to my Kama 554 but it did not have the OEM one like you had. It had a pretty good one ... just hard to get to and clean. Does Loretta's 284 have one like yours had? Should she add the spin on suction strainer mod? Rob-

Hey thanks Rob,
I don't know about Loretta's 284. I think Jinma has redesigned the hydraulics and they now have a spin on strainer near the pump? I'm sure you will be checking her tractor out soon. You did a bang up job on your 554 with that suction strainer you added with the magnet and all, that was really cleaver.

Magnets on the filters is a great idea (I must have missed Robs post about that) After realizing my 140micron hydraulic filter probably wont catch the metal filings that wear off the gears I might look at adding round speaker magnets to the bottom of my filters... Matthew.
