Holy shit Larry, that is the cleanest, best, most sanitary project build EVER! What a terrific job. Not only your fabrication and design skills, but that powder coating is just over the top! You're not kidding that looks like candy. Looks like a delicious desert any one of us would LOVE to have. Everything...just outstanding Larry! Really? Yea I guess it's turning out to be insane - Thanks Rob OK here is the latest - I got the swing cylinder hydraulics plumbed to test it out under power. Ran the cylinder to it's extremes in both directions, amazingly I got exactly full 90* swing. I guess designing this stuff in CAD really does work after all. Next was to test fit the tine holding bar, it fit so I took it off and apart to weld on the index plates and the 1" ID DOM seamless tubing for the angle cylinder clevis pins. I tack welded the DOM in place so the 1" pins and holes were parallel to each other. Last was to apply the finish coat and re install it onto the boom. After that I plumbed in the windrow angle cylinder which also acts to keep the blade parallel to the line of pull no matter what the swing angle is. (articulation) I guess I'll have to bolt the tines on it tomorrow so that is will be DONE!!!! Larry

Here it is, the moment of truth.. will it work?, does it work?.... you be the judge. In the first segment of the video, I gave the rake tine holder a little nudge, if you watched the video, the flange bearing I added sure does make it smooth, If I had not stopped it, there is no telling how long it would have spun around like that. Absolutely fantastic Larry. Everything works great and fits perfectly. Guess it's time to bolt on the tines and give it a rip now, eh?

Absolutely fantastic Larry. Everything works great and fits perfectly. Guess it's time to bolt on the tines and give it a rip now, eh? Thank you Rob, Yep time to bolt on tines - First I inserted 3/8" grade 8 bolts and extra thick (1/4") flat washers, then proceeded to attach tines with nuts and lock washers. All 41 tines lined up quite nicely: Below is a video demonstrating a third feature (besides the swing and angle). I was keeping this secret for a BIG SURPRISEending. Did anyone theorize or speculate the design incorporated that feature? Please check out the video to see what I'm talking about: ;D ;D ;D I'll be able to try it out as soon as the mud dries up, probably when I get back from a week long road trip from my day job. Larry

Larry,
Nice whirly-gig action, but I can't figure why you would need it? Do tell!
Your build is superb, I really like the paint, very big wow factor. I notice it matches Loretta's paint scheme on the honey bee.
Excellent job, what a honkin landscape rake. I don't think anyone will ask, "where's the beef"?
Thanks for sharing your process with us. Let us know how it performs.

Oh Yeah! That's a cool feature... Lucky or what? I bet it could rake up neat piles of sticks with that feature.
That thing needs a Blade adapter.

A truly amazing piece of work -- only problem is now SWMBO will expect the landscaping to be done I am sure it will create great piles of refuse -- but wait --don't talk about piles around old people

Let us know how it performs. Thank you Tim, I assume the whirly gig action you refer to is when it was spinning around several times? It was just a test to see how well balanced the rake was and to verify the bearing would support the weight. When using the cylinder to reverse direction of the tines, that will be used to push the rake backward so as to push debris into a pile for easy removal. Larry

FINALLY a rake in action video: (~10 meg) I tried it in all cylinder positions, working them to their extremes by extending and retracting. It works smooth, and obviously did not fall apart, nor bend or break any parts, I didn't shear any bolts or bend any cylinders. So I am super please how it all turned out. Below are a few shots of raked ground after initial raking, grass seeded then raked smooth: Did you notice how tall and green the weeds are? We are in the middle of our monsoon season, so everything is growing out of control. I have not mowed or weed whacked since starting the rake project, so I better get after it. Thanks for all your support, interest and ideas in this build it yourself rake project. ;D Larry
