There is nothing wrong with my prostrate I'll have you know !! I've just paid good money to have that proven, finger and all (and still no flowers!!) An ingrate is someone who is ungrateful, not what I am, but what I may have seemed to be.. I know, but it's knowing that I am welcome that makes it so good .
Dick
We have just come from a large Mall about a mile from home, found three young American girls, New York, Atlantic City and Washington who were lost and disoriented and had a cup of coffee with them at Starbucks and helped them find their way around and told them how to get a Bus back to their Hostel, they were so pleased to find someone who spoke English as they were beginning to panic so , made round to go round. They were real nice kids too.

Got back from an air and weapons show at the Santiago airport ("FIDAE "if anyone wants to Google it) which was a wonderful day with flying displays and such (great when they go slowly past and then put the re-heat on!! the sound is fantastic and they just go straight up and out of site), my ex California pal and I got trade day tickets which was good, we just missed the A 380 airbus but there was loads of other stuff. I have a friend who works for a weapons company and at their stand I tried to get a free sample Uzi, but no go!! Well when I got home after fighting the traffic for what seemed like hours, there was a parcel waiting for me, it was small and well packaged and came from New Mexico!! take a look It was from Larry Gugliotta and contained the thermostat (82c) and three sqillion "O" rings he had cut for me to make sure of a good tight seal!!, must have taken you hours Larry!! and the neoprene boot for the steering cylinder, the Chinese one having lasted three minutes! I asked the board a while back if there was a tougher drill bit to be had than the high speed steel ones I was using and not getting on very well with, several of you kindly sent me suggestions for alternatives and guess what? Larry included as a gift a set of Titanium nitride M2 high speed step drills! great or what? Further he also sent me as a gift a non contact infrared thermometer which will be great for so many things including tracing the problems with the hot water system at the Farm ! Further enclosed was a very nice personal letter (thanks Larry and Esther) saying nice things!! I an extremely grateful for the Tractor and personal things and consider myself very lucky to have such good friends, the willingness to help others by so many on this board is truly great! I shall be going to the farm at the end of next week and shall do my best to return with photos of the goods fitted! Thank you so much Larry you are a great guy and very much appreciated !! Dick

Dick, You are very welcome, and your words are too kind as it was no big deal to machine the thermostat and make the "three sqillion "O" rings" HaHaHa - I love that. In actuality it only took a few minutes to cut all those o-rings on the lathe. Your only going to use one, I just wanted to make sure you had an assortment of thicknesses to chose from so as to get the correct size for your tractor. Glad to see your care package arrived in one piece. I see the polyurethane boot "grew" back to it's normal size, I squished it down to the minimum so as to pack it in that small box. Those step drills should come in handy too, I hope they work on that stubborn steel you are trying to drill. Oh and that cute little IR thermometer, it's a clock and a stop watch too - not that time matters down there in Chile I bought them to give away as gifts to my friends, I did keep a couple for myself. I hope you find time to install your new thermostat and that it all goes as planned. Your 354 engine will be much more efficient and be quite happy to run at 82* c. Oh and your nice antique mirrored curio cabinet, I like that allot. I guess it's a curio cabinet?, The only thing I know about antiques is that they are old. Enjoy! Larry

Larry, your modesty does you credit, and I also believe the higher operating temperature will be better for the 354, the original "cold" temp always worried me. I shall be going to the farm for several days at the end of the coming week and shall do my best to fit and document the 'stat and boot, I shall remember your instructions for fitting the boot " It can be installed with determination and a few choice curse words" those are the kind of instructions I can understand!! The "cabinet" is a late Victorian (1880's) Ladies roll top inlaid writing desk with display cabinet above, not really a "bon heur de jour", but getting in that direction. WHEN you come down, you will see the place is stuffed with such things, the kind view is that over the years we kept the best, the other view is that we are full up with stuff we paid too much for and can't sell!! I also like your "Vienna" wall clock, how many weights does it have? Like your definition of "Antique" "they are old", guess that makes me an antique then! (also unsaleable). Rest assured all will be used to full potential!
Thanks again,
Dick

None !
Hi Dick, That wall clock is a battery operated Howard Miller I received as a gift from my employer for 20 years of service (10 years ago), the Westminster chime on it is an electronic copy, however it does sound very authentic. We do have a true mechanical Ridgeway grandfather floor clock with three weights. That one is a really nice clock. (received as an award)
OK Dick, what gives? you got all that stuff I sent installed?

Well, back again , been at the farm all last week and got loads done, fencing, cattle pen, started on a cattle crush, water system re routed and fully functional thanks to Larry's infra red thermometer, the none functional hot water system partially worked with the new found pressure, so with the help of the sensor located where the temperature in the (plastic) water pipe dipped and fortunately it was near a compression joint which I released, pointed the pipe outside and turned the pump on briefly, there was a rush of black stuff and a "plug" of something horrible flew out the end, I assume this was residue from the tank when it was high on it's old tower and in the strong sun for some three months! any way it's all fine now! Changed the steering "boot" for the new one Larry sent me and he was right about the choice curse words to get the boot on to the cylinder housing, the one that worked for me was... "you won't beat me you little b*****d" and on it went! wonder what Larry's was? before The old boot Job done I also changed the thermostat for the higher temperature one Larry sourced, machined and sent me with a wealth of "O" rings, it was fairly simple and the new higher operating temp suits the 354 a lot better, the slight smoke from the exhaust has gone and it runs much smoother , it takes some time to come up to the new 82c temp, goes a tad above, drops back and stays there like rock. Ready to start Stripped down Old 'stat and "O" ring New 'stat and "O" rings Back together Bull's eye !! I also got to use ( a little ) one of the titanium step drills Larry gave me and it worked well, much sharper than the drills I had been using. I really can't thank Larry G. enough for his help and support , we are very lucky to have him!! On a sad note, lost one of the Puppies, she was the smallest and cutest and was liked by everyone who met her, she took ill one afternoon, and I took her and put her in a box near the wood burning stove in the house, poor little thing groaned and moaned, I gave her some antibiotics and a little Ibuprofen all to no avail, the second day she just stopped breathing, I thought it was poisoning and talking to my neighbors they agreed as they had lost a couple of dogs to poisoning over the years. I put her where she can feel the suns rays as it comes up and near where the other two dogs play................Her name was Chip, Dick

Nice work Dick, The temperature is perfect, now she's hot, hot ,hot! I could not help notice how dried and cracked the paint is starting to look, man it must be very hot and dry to cause that? Oh well it's a tractor so no big deal right? Oh and that poor steering boot, I think you said it was messed up or something like that? But holly crap it looks like Hugh Hefner's 102 year old worn out pecker Glad to see you made use of just about everything I sent down there for you, good deal. Changed the steering "boot" for the new one Larry sent me and he was right about the choice curse words to get the boot on to the cylinder housing, the one that worked for me was... "you won't beat me you little b*****d" and on it went! wonder what Larry's was?HaHaHa - that's great you found the correct curse word to get the boot on. I tried all of them in every possible combination until I just about ran out of variations, then all of a sudden it slipped on, good thing too because I thought I was going to have to start swearing in some foreign language before I got it right. Sorry to here about the loss of your beloved pet Chip, I get quite upset when I here about pets getting poisoned by some cruel heartless coward. Hopefully that will never happen to any of your dogs again. Hang in there my brother Dick. Larry

Lucky Dick, Good work man. That new rubber steering boot looks pretty sexy like that. I like Larry's description of the old one a lot. ;D The temperature on you ride seems perfect now. That's also a great improvement since a properly heated diesel is a good running one. Glad to see you taking such good care of Tracto Blanco! Rob-

Larry, How do you know what Hugh Hefner's pecker looks like? something your not telling us maybe? Rob and Larry, yes should be a lot better now. The cracked (crazed) paint is the thick (and seemingly quite inappropriate ) black gunge that some idiot at the Jinma dealers place spayed ALL over everything, cables, belts, All the engine and most everything else, I have for some time harbored dark thoughts about meeting him on a dark night!! as it cracks it reveals (in some places ) more white paint underneath , so maybe it's self healing ! Thanks for the kind words about Chip, she was only 5 months old and cute as a button and poison can be so painful.

Great to see how you guys network here and take care of each other. Hey Larry, I PM'ed you the other day about one of your "high speed-low drag" thermostats for my JM 354. Could you turn one down for me also? If so, how much do I owe you? You can send a PM if you wish.
Thank you, Kevin

Kevin,
Thanks for asking, It would be a pleasure to set you up with one of those "High speed - low drag" T-stats, plus a couple of rubber spacers to seal the gap between the top of the T-stat and housing. Send me a PM with your shipping address and I'll get one heading your way.

Kevin,
Yesterday afternoon I picked up a NAPA # 133 thermostat for you . It has been machined to fit your Jinma 354. I didn't post any pictures of that so as not do bore anyone with the same pics and video that I have already posted on page one of this thread. It's packed and will ship out today. With any luck you should receive it by Wednesday (5/21/08) of next week. Let us know how it goes when you install it. Maybe a good time to drain and flush out the cooling system, then add antifreeze rated for wet sleeved diesels maybe pick up some Fleet charge coolant with SCA (Supplemental cooling additive)
I did find a new way to cut precision gaskets out of rubber hose. I used one of those harbor freight tail pipe expansion tools inserted into the rubber hose, then expanded the tool onto the inside walls of the hose, then chucked the expansion tool into the lathe. I cut the gaskets similar to the videos on page 1 of this thread. The neat thing about using that tail pipe expander is the ability to hold various ID sizes of hose.
