Good show Paul. From the stories you hear about companies it sounds as if they can take a bit of training from Apache.....Mike

Good to hear they are sending a new one to you. A loose connection will generate heat, I was electrician for 42 years & have seen a lot of damage from bad connections, fix them all now while it is down.

Well the tech at Apache Power was a man of his word and FedEx delivered the new capacitor Sat. It is identical in all ways except the replacement is rated at 16uF and the one that went bad was rated at 12uF. I replaced the female spade connectors and put the new one in, I was happy to see the green "Power" indicator light lit up again. I ran it for 5hrs under a load and so far so good, I think I will do the same tomorrow and ramp up the load. Hard to see but this connector was definitely opened up with a tool of some type. I suspect the assemblers do this to allow for fast and easy slip on of the harness to the various components. Paul

I'm glad to hear that the new capacitor did the job, Paul. You should be good to go now.

Thanks Rich, needless to say but I was a much happier camper when that green light came on again. I want to get some more hours on this unit while it is still under the warranty from Apache, and I want to change the oil again after 20hrs and replace it this time with synthetic diesel oil. Everything I have read up about chinese diesel generators swears by using synthetic oil after the breakin period is complete. I really like this Yanmar Clone diesel engine, runs very smooth and strong and it is "relatively quiet" for what it is. A lot quieter that an equivalent gas powered generator, with the exception of a very pricey Honda of course and I`m getting over 12hrs run time on 4gals of fuel which isn`t bad. All in all I would recommend one of these generators but with the advice to immediately change out the fluids and tighten up all electrical connections.

I'd suggest giving it a bit more than just 20 hours break-in before switching to the synthetic oil, Paul. Maybe more like 50 hours. Change again at 20 and then switch at 50. 20 hours is just the initial break-in to allow full load operation, but all the wear hasn't yet happened to get the rings fully seated, I believe. At least, that's the way I've been doing my stuff for the past several years and it has worked well for me.
You'll notice the fuel economy drop considerably when you run the thing under a heavy load, I'm sure. Probably not as much of a drop as a gas engine would show, but significant nonetheless. I'd guess you'll see around 7-8 hours max run time on 4 gallons under full load. Which is still better than a gas engine, of course.
Glad to hear all is now going well. Like all mass-produced stuff these days, it pays to take the time to blueprint them right form the git-go.

Well this chinese made Apache diesel generator has continued to serve us well and has experienced no breakdowns since that capacitor meltdown early on during breakin. It just got a good workout from Hurricaine Sandy and kept out house alive for 24hrs of no power. It is very good on fuel and I get the average of 12hrs per 3.9gals of diesel, a lot better than my friends new Generac gas generator which uses 7.2gals of gas for 10hrs of run time and makes twice as much noise.
