Hey guys it been a while since I started a new thread. I've been visiting now and then to keep on top of any new activity. As most of you know, I've been super busy at work so Esther and I finally did something special for ourselves to enjoy the fruits of my labor. We went a bought this contraption Purchased it sight unseen online from Omaha Nebraska. The shipping quote was ridiculous so we flew from Albuquerque to Omaha on frequent flier awards and rode it the 800 miles back home. Our carefully planned "non freeway" - back road route took us across Nebraska, Kansas, a small sliver of Oklahoma, Texas and finally home to New Mexico. It was a blast, everywhere we stopped for fuel or to rest a bit just about everyone stopped by to check it out and chat with us. We meet great people and enjoyed their company. One couple offered their sports boat in trade! They sounded serious! Anyway it's a Ural 749 CC made near the Ural mountains in Russia. Even-though its a 2010, in essence it's body style is still based on the original 1939 WWII "combat" motorcycle. It's got a reverse gear and engage-able 2WD on the sidecar for getting through mud and snow so it will fit right in around our neck of the woods. There is a machine gun mount available so I might have to pick one of those up in the near future ;D We look forward to more road trips with some hunting and fishing thrown in for good measure. All this was Esther's idea so none of this was my "fault". She's been wanting a Motorcycle with a side car for years so I finally "gave in" to her wishes. Larry

Great score, Larry! I've kinda lusted after one of those Ural sidehacks for a few years now, but never acted on it. I sold my Harley since I was never riding it and I'm afraid the same situation would happen if I got another bike. At least I can admire yours and get some vicarious pleasure out of reading your exploits with it. ;D

That is too cool, Larry. 2wd, reverse, AND it was the misses' idea! Just too cool.

Congrats Larry and Esther. Reverse and 2X2 , suppose you'll be fitting a backhoe soon. I think the 800 mile journey back home was inspired, you had an adventure, holiday, got to know the machine and saved the transportation costs, talk about win win. Dick

Cool machine and adventure Larry! You and Esther look great in that last pic. For some reason traveling from Omaha reminds me of this Charlie Daniels tune. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdpSSpEujqUIt sounds like you are happy with it so far. I hope you have many great adventures to post about in the future. I found the Ural site: www.imz-ural.com/

Anyway it's a Ural 749 CC made near the Ural mountains in Russia. Here in Germany we call it "Stalins Rache" which means "Stalin's revenge" yes, it is based on the BMW R 71 later after WW2 the Russians start to fabricate in Kiew one more Motorcycle based on the BMW R 71 called KMZ (Kiew Motoziklui Zawot) and in 1967 they change the Name to Dnjepr. Both Motorcycles are very similar but the difference in Quality is like day and night and the Ural is much better

Tractor/NAPPA dealer here in Locust grove, Ok sells them. They have them in camouflage or black. They look good in black. I think they only sold one in the past 6 months. I have no idea how reliable they are. PJ

Hi all,
Thanks for all the nice compliments on our new machine. I still have it, the wife and I take it out for a joy ride every now and then and it's still a blast. I have about 3500 KM on it now. And it continues to turn heads wherever we go. Every time we stop for an errand, gas or whatever, someone always comes up to check it out and "ratchet jaw" with us. Amazingly it is very reliable although a bit under powered. The beast weighs in at over 800 pounds (all steel). It really is made for off road so it’s no "cruiser" by any stretch of the imagination but it fits right in the terrain and life style we live. I did a bunch of upgrades over this past fall and winter to improve performance as much as possible, new Kehin Carbs, Hotter ignition system, complete new American made tuned exhaust system coated in high temp black ceramic, replaced all the cheapo Russian wheel bearings with high quality hardened and sealed bearings, added a "throttlemeister" throttle lock (poor man’s cruise control) and of course a hand grenade used as a handle to assist getting in and out of the side car.
Oh and added dual air horns that I camouflaged myself, a fancy forward reverse / 2 wheel drive engage disengage shifter kit. Esther made a cool camo back rest pillow and camo spare wheel cover. I will attach some pictures of all the new gadgets as soon as I get a chance to upload them to my photo bucket account.
This past winter we took it out in the snow a couple of times and put it in 2 WD just because we could, it was a riot, I did donuts around the yard in the ice and snow just for fun but froze our faces and butts off going down the snow packed road to show it off - never do that again!
