After several years of struggling to catch from hard luck and tough times, (read, expensive divorce), I think I'm finally getting somewhere. Today, we signed a contract to buy a piece of property where we someday hope to build a house. Nothing fancy, just a couple of acres, but it will be ours free and clear to do with pretty much as we please. It's only a mile up the road fro where our house and shop are now, so clearing t and getting a cistern and septic in shouldn't be as much of a chore as it might be. I'm pretty damn excited about the whole prospect, actually.
I'm hoping to get it cleared within a couple of months and then a couple more to do the cistern and septic. Then I start building. I think I have one more house left in me, anyway. Those damn concrete blocks get heavier every year so I gotta get cracking on this while I still can.
The tractor is sure going to come in handy for a lot of this work. A neighbor has a small Kubota 3-point hoe he said I can borrow, too. Now I just need to come up with a chipper. Did I mention that this property is in our local rain forest? Lots of clearing to do!

well, I went out Sunday and walked the property to try to locate all the boundary markers and get a better feel for the lay of the land. I did find the most important boundary marker, but two of them eluded me, due probably to having been destroyed when the adjacent road was cleared after one of our storms. No problem, as I know within a couple of feet where they should be and they don't affect my clearing or building plans at all. When I get an as-built survey will be good enough for locating them.
The clearing process is going to be a pretty hefty chore, from what I can see. thousands of saplings to remove and dozens of useless trees in the 4" - 8" caliper range. Possibly a couple of bigger ones that are storm-damaged and may not be worth trying to save. They seem to be just about where i think the best building spot is, but I'll know more when I get some initial clearing done. There's also a few downed trees form previous storms that will need to be cut up and removed, too. Looks like I'm going to be busy with the chainsaw and tractor for several long weekends, for sure! There's a guy down the road a ways that makes charcoal so I'm going to see if he wants to cart off some of the wood for his colliery endeavors - that'd save me some work either burning or chipping. Jury is still out on whether or not I buy a chipper...lot of money for something I'd probably only use for this one project, and not much local market to resell it.
It's definitely and adventure!

How about some pictures. I'm in a similar project. I am not going to build for a while, I bought a travel trailer to use. I also have 54 acres, that gives me lots of options.

Man, I wish I had 54 acres with a nifty pond like yours, Roy! But us poor folks gots poor ways.... :-)
At this stage of the game, I'd need a helicopter to take any pictures that would be at all meaningful - the land is overgrown with rain forest jungle and there's no place to get back and take a picture. Once i get even a little bit of clearing done I'll post some pics if I can figure out the flippin' photobucket deal. Is it feasible to just put the pics up on my own website and post live links to them? Can I still do a thumbnail that way? I'm not too slick at this blog posting stuff as yo can probably tell. Hell, I can barely type these days! (grin)

Trial & error & help from this board was how I was able to get the pictures. Experiment & see how it works for you. You can always delete it if it does not work. Looking forward to more updates. Roy

Congratulations Rich! "just a couple of acres" - IN PARADISE! ;D
It's fine to post a link to your own website. We dont really need thumbnails.

Links Links we want Links! Congratulations on your purchase! Don't be surprised if you find that a lot of the trees that you want to save are garbage. There is a lot of sense in clearing the whole lot but the tree huggers have us brain washed.
From your description of the lot a chipper is going to be a good investment. I spent enough on rentals to buy one but didn't have a tractor to run it. What will you do with it if you don't chip it and what about the labor? Good Luck
