The four clamps were evenly spaced ~ 20" apart to hold the hydraulic hose so that it would not sag. I picked up the lumber for the floor yesterday. I started to install it as the clouds were starting to build up in the sky (AGAIN) I got 3 of the 5 planks drilled & carriage bolted on. Then as I was getting ready to cut the fourth board it was lightening all around me, real close . Then the sky let loose and the rains came down. So I scrambled to pick up all my tools and took the last shot of the day. Just as well, I was getting tired and hungry the Mrs. was ready to serve up dinner. Larry

I had a little time this past weekend to finish the floor on my dump trailer in between celebrated my Mom & Dad's 60th wedding anniversary. My sisters from Florida & Ohio were there as well as my brother from Albuquerque it was also a family reunion. Had a wonderful time. Anyway I got all the floor boards installed, primed & painted machine tool gray. In the background to the right you can see my "Solar Powered Outhouse". It's stuccoed to match the house I say solar powered because I installed a solar charged "reading" light . This shot includes the Motorcycle "shed" It's finished inside complete with sealed concrete floor, Smooth finished & painted Sheetrock walls and textured celling. She's all done!!! ;D Larry

Larry, What a great build that was. Although I've seen your story before and even seen the dump trailer in real life when I visited you, I'm still amazed at how you did it. Not only that, but it came out sweet. The way you took all those spare parts lying around and built something that useful is really something special man. Rob-

Very nice trailer build Larry I need to pull my finger out and build a dump trailer soon, still toying with ideas... I can't decide between going rigid or having springs, I assume springs would help reduce the trailer bouncing when empty, but I guess bouncing wouldn't really be an issue at the speeds it would be towed behind a tractor... I'm leaning towards going rigid... What do people think of rigid versus sprung trailers for low speed off-road use? Thanks Matthew.

Rob, Matthew - thanks for the compliments. It was a fun build and it sure has come in handy for collecting firewood, hauling dirt and stumps.

Personally, I don't think it makes a hill of beans difference, especially pulling it low speed with a tractor. I would go with what you got to work with. On mine , I had a rear-end which already had leaf springs, plus I was able to use the ends of the springs for the dump hinge. I put no thought into rigid or sprung, I just used what I had. Even though this one has springs, the way they are mounted pretty much makes it rigid. One nice thing about being rigid is no worries about overloading or breaking a spring.
Matthew - what do you have to work with? Do you have some stuff laying around to slap one together? What are some of the things you will use it for?
Based on all your great looking and functional construction and modification projects, whatever you wind up building is going to be cool!

what do you have to work with? Do you have some stuff laying around to slap one together?I've got a stack of shit laying around, lol... it's just a matter of deciding what to use... I think I'll end up using this 6' x 4' ute tray, I purchased it for $40 in 1993, I intended to make a trailer out of it for road use but it never got around to it. I've had it sitting around for 15 years so I really don't care about it getting knocked around by throwing firewood into it and so on, it'll just be good to make use of it..... I'll have to modify the tailgate to hinge from the top, and I "might" extend the front to make it a couple of feet longer, I'll see what happens... The trailer frame the ute body is sitting on I picked up in the mid 90's for $80, it was a friends unfinished project, they had made the frame too wide for the axle and gave up on it... I intended to cut it down to use as a frame for the ute body but it never happened (it's too light weight to use for the dump trailer IMO, it'll probably end up turning into a boat trailer one day) The axle and frame for the dump trailer I'll pull out from under an old Ford Escort van/ute I have... It was "built out of boredom" project that was never quite finished... When I purchased my first bit of land in 1990 I needed a vehicle for gathering firewood so I cut down this van into a ute and welded the diff into a locker to give it some traction offroad... After breaking a couple of diffs I decided to add a second gearbox to gear it down, the second gearbox took the place of the tailshaft and I made a rigid rear end for it, I planned to put a couple of small tractor tires on the back... it all worked ok but I never really finished it off or made use of it... I'm not sure yet if I'll use the axle and frame as it is or cut it apart and make use of the steel, I need to pull it out and measure it up.... What are some of the things you will use it for?The usual things, moving firewood, rocks, and dirt.... I had to move 4 trailer loads of dirt in my box trailer the other day, having to shoveling the dirt out of the trailer annoyed the hell out of me so I'm fairly motivated to get the dump trailer built soon I'll probably make a start on it in the next couple of weeks, I need to finish my ripper and pipe layer first (I'll post about that later) Matthew.

After seeing you have to work with Matt, it got me to thinking. With that in mind, I wonder if I could make a super heavy duty trailer out of Fergie? I'd like something I can pile lots of rocks into...several tons in fact. The dump trailer I bought along with Loretta's stuff is only rated for 2200lbs. I put two Kama scoops of gravel in it and the tires started to flatten out. Size wise it could hold more, but I think it was over the weight limit? Rob-

Yes, not all the way, but they were starting to. I think the inflation for those tires was like 20psi or something like that. You can go to this thread where I'm posting photos of her dump trailer, starting at reply #28. Loretta's Dump Trailer

Awesome job Larry! Now, about those rims......... Thank you Bob! What about the rims? I know there old (Salvaged from an abandon illegal dump site) but do you see some sort of problem with them that I should correct? Your input is much appreciated. Larry

The only problem I see is aesthetic. They detract from the quality look of the trailer. I was thinking along the lines of chrome or aluminum.
