This is how it works: Now I need to add some chains or other means to hold the gate open and parallel to the floor bed in tail gate mode. Larry

Oh man Larry, That new dump trailer really turned out sweet. I can see by the quality that you have some bucks invested (paint alone ;D) in top quality material like all that diamond plate. That 2 way rear hydraulic gate is fantastic. I love it. The parallel plumbing works cool man. Your work is outstanding as always Larry, ... super clean and sanitary. Very nice project. Rob-

Ha! Thanks Rob!! you sure know how to make a guy feel good about his projects. I appreciate it. Do I have some bucks invested? Naw this is pretty much a scrap project from the get go. The cylinders were "free" (left overs from my Koyler FEL cylinder upgrade). I remember you were interested in them back then, but I used them here, sorry about that man. OK so you know I've been operating the CNC plasma cutter at the metal shop right? I've been getting all kinds of stuff in trade. I can pretty much walk into the place and grab what I need now, or plasma cut on the spot for whatever project I've got going. I feel really lucky. This is my last summer project for the year, I got to get busy cutting next seasons firewood before the weather set in. We had our first fire in the wood stove tonight.
Thanks for checking this out, I look forward to reading and seeing what you got going on.

Very nice work Larry, both design and fab. Pickup truck tailgate cables might work good if you can get a used set for cheap.
Some travel limiting chains/links for the bottom opening function might also be handy for spreading gravel. They'll have to withstand full cylinder forces of course.

I don't want to be the safety nut but it occurs to me that if you are in tailgate mode and inadvertantly operate the dump valve, the tailgate will fall. Here is a crude sketch of a latch you could possibly install on each side to lock it in tailgate mode. The latch could be swung out of the way to allow the bottom to open. Alternatively the limiting chains I talked about in the previous post could also be positioned to function as keepers.

Brad Thanks Brad, I like the pickup truck tailgate cable idea. I'll have to check around and see what I can find or just make my own. H/F carries some sort of S/S cabling system I think used for balustrades and trellises perhaps I can adapt it. Threaded Eye Terminal4MM cableThanks for the heads up regarding the tailgate falling off if I were to inadvertently cycle the cylinders in tailgate mode. I thought about that too but figured if I went stupid and forgot and did that I deserve whatever happens. The gate would only drop a few inches though because the cylinders falling would be stopped by the lower trailer frame. It would be a buggier to get it back in sync if I were by myself though. Your locking bracket design may be in my future if the cylinders do not keep position, especially if I start using this trailer over public roads for hauling stuff and need reliable tailgate mode. Last week I went to Harbor Freight and picked up the threaded eye terminals and some 4mm stranded aircraft cable. Today I was able to make up the cable supports for the tailgate. The eyelet ID is for a 5/16" bolt. Mounting the eyelets and connecting the cables to the swag fitting was simple and work out quite nicely. Below are a couple of pics and a new demonstration video. For this year that's about it on this project. Next year I hope to save up enough for a nice set of diamond plate fenders for the wheels. Maybe then I'll paint the rims. Thanks for checking out this project. Larry

Great work Larry! Those HF cables and ends look good. Your dozer hydraulic output is impressive. The second time you dump it looks like you fully open the valve and the operation of the dump and tailgate is simultaneous. By the way, item 34542-1mkb (order from printed catalog) $39.99. www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?itemnumber=34542Just kidding - fancy wheels are overrated. If you put 22" chrome aluminum spinnies with ultra low profile tires on it I would get upset. When I see those things on a 4x4 truck it's like nails scratching a chalkboard for me. Brad

Hahaha Well lets just say something need to look like crap making it less desirable to trailer thieves. another great job larry Jeep Hi Jeep, Thank you for taking the time to check this out and making a positive comment, much appreciated. Brad Hey thanks Brad, The hydraulics on that dozer are impressive and a good thing too because the OEM cylinders are ~ 3" ID. The high flow rate allows for super fast blade adjustment necessary for leveling uneven terrain on the fly. If your impressed with it operating the dump trailer, you should see my log splitter in action when hooked up to the dozer. Yes I now have the means to operate the log splitter using the dozer hydraulics, engine idle speed seems to be just right for doing that. Thanks for the link on the tire changer and discounted catalog price. Out here in the boondocks something like that could come in handy. Just an FYI..... your 554 Kama hydraulic pump can be upgraded to a 20 ml/rev pump. It's called a 320 Tommy has them. Rob, Ken and I upgraded to a 320 which make a huge improvement in performance. Oh one more thing before I forget. Brad, you mentioned about being able to lock the tailgate in a partial open position for spreading gravel or locking it closed for safety. I thought about that and decided the solution would be to put shutoff valves on the gate cylinders to lock them in any position. Doing that would also allow the tailgate to be opened in tailgate mode, then dumped without the gate falling off. A feature needed for dumping stumps or other odd objects that would not pass through a dump gate opening. Look for that feature in the next update. Thanks for all the great feedback. Larry

Thanks Larry, I saw Rob's pump upgrade. Mine came with a 316 pump which is pretty decent.
That's a great idea for locking the tailgate cylinders!
