You guys are nuts! This is a utility trailer for hauling firewood, stumps and fill dirt with my tractor or bulldozer.
Thanks for the overall quality compliment though. I did omit sandblasting and painting the wheels as a shortcut to putting it to work. So far it's use has been limited to hauling firewood, stumps, and fill dirt around my property. I suppose one day I should paint the wheels, how about Gold Metal flake to match Goldie? The only chrome plating shop we had in Albuquerque closed down several years ago due to the environmental compliance squeeze. The closest city to get chrome plating is Houston, TX - which is about 800 miles from here.
Quciksand- LOL spinners, yea those things drive me crazy. Whenever I see them when I'm stopped at a light, I step harder on my breaks, as I get the feeling I'm still rolling through the intersection.

OK OK - After looking at this picture, I agree, the rims do look like crap: The Squirrels, rabbits, and gophers don't seem to mind though. How do you paint them without taking off the tire? Any tips or tricks to masking off around the tire? Larry

It's been almost 3 years since building this dump trailer. I'm finally adding a tailgate to it! The plan is to have it operate as a dump gate and tailgate. In dump mode it will be hydraulically controlled. In tailgate mode it will be manually operated. First was to draw up basic operation of the gate in hydraulic mode to identify placement of the cylinders. All the little details are in my head, cylinder placement geometry was solved using a CAD program. I'm not much at drawing details but this program sure is priceless for figuring out geometry, and drawing parts for plasma cutting. This is the basic concept: One gate shown in three positions, Closed, Dump mode, Tailgate mode.

Why do you need to mechanically open a tailgate on a tipping bed? Most of the dump trucks I recall seeing used gravity.

Why do you need to mechanically open a tailgate on a tipping bed? Most of the dump trucks I recall seeing used gravity. Dump gates are latched closed when filling and transporting so the gate does not swing in the breeze and material does not push them open spilling out contents cracking windshields of morons that follow too close. When dumping it has to be un-latched. I'm lazy and don't want to get off the tractor or dozer just to un-latch the gate, then latch it again when finished. Additionally the way it's going to be set up, the cylinder cross tubes will act as hinges when the gate is lowered like a tail gate on a pick up truck. A dump gate that is not latched closed is like not having a gate at all. The tilt cylinders and tail gate cylinders will be plumbed in parallel so that it will work automatically - no extra control valve needed.! Hope that explains it. Larry

Larry are those wheels chromed yet? Hope you don't get as lazy as me- getting off the tractor all the time instead of fabricating something up. Cannot wait to see the trailer gate in action will you use a remote control? -Ed

The gate will open as the bed is tilted for dumping so no remote control this time. Larry

O.K. was curious how you were going to make the top hinge so that it could swing from the top as well as the bottom via remote Thanks Ed

Larry, It is amazing what one misses when one is away. I think that your trailer is going to be top shelf when it is finished. I read through from beginning to the current post and can't wait to see it finished. BTW, what is the bolt spacing, back spacing and diameter of those wheels? You know, you could paint them white to match Goldie's wheels and add a nice gold pinstripe around the outer bead flange. Top them off with a baby moon cap and they would be awesome! hubcapmike.com/baby-moons.html...or some other vintage cap... hubcapmike.com/vintage_hubcaps.html

No fancy hub caps yet But I did make progress finishing up what I started . Picking up where I left off I managed to complete the tail gate fabrication. This is what it looks like after all the welds cooled off: Next was to design and plasma cut a curvaceous hinge bracket. That component is key in getting the gate to operate as both a tail gate and a dump gate. Here in this first pic on the left is the a-cad drawing, on the right the real live part I managed to plasma cut yesterday afternoon: Here the hinge bracket is fitted and welded into position: Larry
