Thanks guys, That's not really what I meant. I understood your original use of the term "third function."
As I understand the philosophy of "power beyond", operating valves in parallel where multiple valves divert flow from the open center loop and direct exhaust flow to a low pressure return is the standard "good practice". Operating valves in series where the exhaust is used to power a downstream valve is not recommended. According to the technical support guy at Baum Hydraulics who sold me the power beyond adapter for my backhoe valves, the internal seals and exhaust port were not designed for high back-pressure.
So, if I operate a non-PB grapple solenoid at the same time as I operate the 3ph, the grapple exhaust will be powering the 3ph in series. You guys have certainly demonstrated that there is no harm in pressurizing the exhaust port of the solenoid valve by operating the 3ph by itself. Since I have both the loader valve and the rear remote valve reliefs upstream, there is no risk of pump overpressure. It is still puzzling to me that solenoid valves with power beyond seem to be pretty much non-existant.

Hi Brad,
Not that I'm counting or anything I just noticed it's been exactly two months to the day since your last post on this. We are bored to death here and need your grapple project coming to life. What UP? Insert sound of whip cracking here. ->
Hope you and yours are doing good and that there is no real excuse for not having this completed by now. It's not going to take 14 months like your BH sub frame is it?. The parts I sent must be rusty by now? Or lost in the "to-do" pile?
No really take your time,
Larry

Hey thanks Larry for the incentives, I haven't had too much time but I do have a little progress I can show. See - the parts didn't get rusty. I got all of the bushings cut and at least solidly tacked into place. I trued an end of each bushing on the lathe and used step blocks to get the spacing I wanted, then clamped everything to the table for alignment. I don't feel like my little mig is as hot as I want for this so I'll be finishing the welds with my engine driven welder.

My regular bench isn't big enough so I put the main structure on the plate I use for a router table to square it up. I used step blocks again and some smaller spacers to get the cross tubes square and at the right height. I made a mistake in not clamping everything tight when I tacked them. I welded the left ends and by the time I welded the right ends they had each pulled 1/4" closer to me. I cut those welds back off, tweaked the tubes back square, and made short welds on 3 sides of each tube end. Then I carried it outside and stick welded the rest and tacked the front plate in place.

As I welded the cross tubes I tried to go back and forth to make symmetrical welds on opposite ends of each tube. It still lays flat on the table so I guess that worked. The pivot ends pulled in a little towards each other. I'll bend them back straight next. I cherry picked a little for this weld close-up. It's a single pass stringer bead using 1/8" 7018 rod. Still some slag at the very bottom.. That's it for now. Hopefully I can do some more on it this weekend. Thanks for asking! Brad

A little side note - last Wed. my old Dell M70 mobile workstation died and the HDD was unrecoverable. I had done some of the grapple work on my C: drive. I was worried that the latest drawings were lost. This morning I verified that I had a copy of everytning on my network drive . The newer HP 8710w I now have seems good. Aside from speed, network drives are a good thing. I went through 2 loaners in 3 days and didn't really miss much.

Hey Brad,
It's starting to take shape quite nicely. I like your clamping technique to keep the bushings squared up using step blocks. I also noticed you took the time to remove all the mill slag around where it needs to be welded, man you really pay attention to detail. As usual your stick welds are tops. Your grapple is going to come out great. Did you pick up the cylinder? Have you decided on what kind of valve your going to use?
That was a close one on the HHD crash, Backup's really pay off. I learned the hard way when my laptop HHD crashed. I lost lots of photos and my landscape rake drawings. I wound up downloading my pics from photobucket to recover those. I re-drew the landscape rake from scratch. Needless to say I now keep current on my backups.

Brad, there's hope sometimes to recover stored data on a crashed hard drive. One method is to install a new hard drive, make it the master, install operating system and then install the crashed drive and make it the slave by changing the jumpers or other methods if you operating system warrants it. After booting, the master should recognize it as a second drive. Sometimes all or part of the data can be recovered that way. After recovery, if possible, run a wipe or zero fill program on the bad drive to destroy your personal data and then trash it. Never trash a hard drive if there is any data on it you don't want anyone to retrieve. PJ
Oh incidentally, nice job on the grapple.

Larry, Thanks for the comments. You might be able to see the cylinder in the first pic in my reply#47 above. I got the one from Agri Supply on that trip to Raleigh. Their store in Garner is huge - pretty basic but everything's spread out and easy to get to. I also picked up some 12' x 3/8" hoses for the cyl, some odds and ends, 3 rolls of fencing, anyhow it all rang up to more than $500. Think of what I saved! I'll temporarily run the grapple off a rear remote like Parry did, then spring for the solenoid setup as I get caught up. PJ, Thanks for the computer tips. That was my work laptop and as I work for a Big Company, IT takes care of that stuff. (I'm not allowed to) They put encryption software on all of our laptops that seems to confound their efforts to recover data. Now that a 1TB external drive can be had for about $100, it does make sense to back up all of my personal files at home, even save an "image" of each computer. I'm having to do a little maintenance on the welder. Flush and fill the coolant, replace a bad hose, etc. Spent yesterday afternoon running for parts. It was raining anyhow. Brad

Brad 10 years ago, who would have imagined that there would ever be such a thing! My first computer didn't even have a HD. It used 5.5 inch floppys. My second computer had a whopping big 164 mega bite hard drive, which I changed to a 200 mb when I could afford one. If some of these youngsters only knew what we had to use back then. Funny thing about it though, we thought we were cookin! ;D

I remember reading about the Cray 1 in Popular Science. Now I have several of them on my desktop.
I like the new avatar. Cool bubble canopy. You should start a thread about it.

Brad, sorry for hijacking your post. Didn't mean it to get this far.
It's ok with me if a moderator could move my posts on this to the general discussion board where I should have put them in the first place. My fault Brad, sorry. PJ
